The Olympic cauldron where the Olympic flame burned during the Montreal Olympic Games in 1976 was rekindled today at 11 am, during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Sochi .The flame will shine until February 23 and then from 7 to 16 March for the Paralympic Games.
In a gesture of solidarity with the LGBT community, the niche of the Olympic Park’s Tower will shine with the colors of the rainbow tonight. Thereafter, the niche will display orange and amber colors recalling the Olympic flame for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Olympic cauldron, located on the Esplanade Financière Sun Life at the corner of Pie- IX and Sherbrooke, is the original cauldron of the 1976 Games which was lit by athletes Sandra Henderson and Stephane Prefontaine. At the time, she was inside the stadium.
