The Sports Centre offers a selection of swimming classes for little fishies to novice swimmers. We also have specialized classes for adults who’d like to feel comfortable in the water or want to improve their technique to get the most out of training. Our certified instructors will ensure young and old alike are always in good hands—in order to achieve their full potential!

Adults – Teens

This program is designed for adults to increase their knowledge of water safety and learn proper swimming techniques.

In this level

Swimmers will learn how to float on their front and back, glide through the water on their front and back using leg kicks, swim on their front for 10 metres, enter and exit water in shallow areas and enjoy activities in the deep end, with help.

Basics 2 (intermediate)

Initiation to different swimming styles

Prerequisite

Some swimming experience needed,  must be able to easily swim 10 metres on your front.

Teens

The swimmer must be between 13 and 16 years old.

In this level

Learn how to swim on your back by rolling your shoulders, the front and backstroke (15 metres), diving from the sitting position, diving from the kneeling position, the dive start in stop position and treading water. Will be swimming distances of 25 metres.

Kid’s swimming

10-level program for kids 6 and up.
This program for school-aged kids will help little swimmers to develop the six basic swimming techniques (front crawl, back stroke, breast stroke, elementary back stroke, butterfly, and sidestroke), learn water safety and increase their physical fitness and endurance—all while having fun! Kids are encouraged to set goals for distance and time, which is excellent motivation for the 10-level program!

In this level

Swimmers will learn to glide on their front and while flutter kicking as well as how to swim on their front. They will also enjoy activities in the shallow end (with help) and swim continuously for 10 metres.

The swimmer must be 6 years old as of the first day of the course and have completed the Red Cross Swim Crocodile or demonstrate the skills and knowledge of Junior 2.

In this level

Swimmers will increase the distance of glides on their front and back while flutter kicking, flutter kick without help, wear a PFD in deep water and float in deep water. They will learn to swim continuously for 15 metres.

The swimmer must be 6 years old as of the first day of the course and have completed the Red Cross Swim Whale or demonstrate the skills and knowledge of Junior 3.

In this level

Swimmers will learn to swim on their back with shoulder roll and front crawl (10 metres), improve flutter kicks while swimming on their back, dive from the kneeling position and learn the basics of sculling water. They will learn to swim continuously for 25 metres.

In this level

Swimmers will learn to improve their front crawl (15 metres), learn the backstroke (15 metres), learn the whip kick on their back, the strike dive, treading water and sculling on their back, head first. They will learn to swim continuously for 50 metres.

Junior 6

The swimmer must be 7 years old as of the first day of the course and demonstrate the skills and knowledge of Junior 5.

In this level

Swimmers will increase their distance of their front and back stroke (25 metres), tread water in the deep end and perform the front dive. Plus they will learn the elementary back stroke (15 metres) as well as dolphin kicks. They will learn to swim continuously for 75 metres.

Junior 7

In this level

Swimmers will improve their distance for front and back stroke (50 metres) and elementary back stroke (25 metres) as well as dolphin kicks. They will learn to scull and whip kick on their front. They will learn to swim continuously for 150 metres.

Junior 8

Prerequisite

The swimmer must be 8 years old as of the first day of the course and demonstrate the skills and knowledge of Junior 7.

In this level

Swimmers will improve their distance for front and back stroke (75 metres) and elementary back stroke (25 metres). They will also learn the breaststroke (15 metres) as well as whip kicks/tread water, perform feet-first surface dives and standing shallow dives. They will learn to swim continuously for 300 metres.

Junior 9

The swimmer must be 9 years old as of the first day of the course and demonstrate the skills and knowledge of Junior 8.

In this level

Swimmers will improve their distance for front and back stroke (100 metres), elementary back stroke (50 metres) and breast stroke (25 metres). They will learn sidestroke kicks and how to perform a head-first surface dive. They will learn to swim continuously or 400 metres.

Junior 10

The swimmer must be 9 years old as of the first day of the course and demonstrate the skills and knowledge of Junior 9.

In this level

Swimmers will improve their distance for front and back stroke (100 metres), elementary back stroke (50 metres) and breast stroke (25 metres). They will also learn the sidestroke (25 metres). Plus they will learn to dolphin kick (vertically), and perform feet- and head-first surface dives with underwater swim. They will learn to swim continuously for 500 metres.

Preschool swim classes

8-level program for kids 4 months to 5 years old.
This 8-level program lets children enjoy the water at the appropriate age and ability level. Every level is based on an aquatic-animal theme and comes with its own mascot—which makes learning fun and interesting for little ones!

The participation of a parent or guardian who can swim is mandatory.

Starfish

8 lessons of 30 minutes each

Prerequisite

Babies must be between 4 to 11 months old and be able to hold their head.

In this level

Babies will work on getting wet, float and move on their front, back and vertical position, and learn to enter and exit in shallow water.

Children will increase their distance on front and back glide with kick, as well as the front and back swim. They will also learn the sitting dive. At the end of this level, children will be able to swim 15 metres.

Lifesaving training

To become a lifeguard, you need four different types of training. The first is the Bronze Medallion, which will introduce you to first aid and rescue techniques. Once you pass this course, as long as you’re 15 or older, you can work as an assistant lifeguard at a pool. You then have to take a Bronze Cross as well as a General First Aid/DEA course, which is a 16-hour course dedicated to first aid. Then you can take the National Lifeguard course. A great job awaits!

To become an instructor, you need to take the assistant monitor in water safety course, followed by the water-safety monitor course.

Bronze Medallion

24 hours including the exam

$105 (plus taxes) + $37.25 certification

Prerequisite

Must have Bronze Cross or be 13 years old at time of final exam or demonstrate the skills and knowledge of Red Cross Kids 10 as of the first course.

In this level

The Bronze Medallion certificate introduces swimmers to the four basic components of lifesaving: judgement, knowledge, skills, and physical fitness. Swimmers will learn tow and carry techniques, defense and release in order to be prepared to save conscious and unconscious victims in situations that are increasingly risky.

Bronze Cross

24 hours including exam

Prerequisite

Must have Bronze Medallion.

In this level

The Bronze Cross certificate is for those looking for more advanced training and want to know the basic notions of aquatic facility supervision. Swimmers will learn the difference between lifeguarding and lifesaving, basic emergency procedures and teamwork. They will also learn to rescue a spinal-injury and cardiopulmonary victim.

Sauveteur national

45 hours including exam

In this level

Reconnu comme norme de performance du surveillant-sauveteur au Canada, le certificat Sauveteur national est conçu de façon à développer une compréhension approfondie des principes de surveillance, un bon jugement et une attitude responsable quant au rôle qu’assume le surveillant-sauveteur dans une installation aquatique.

Premier soins – Général

$88 + $11.25 certification

Prerequisite

Aucun, la Croix de bronze est recommandé.

In this level

Ce certificat prépare le candidat à assumer un rôle d’intervenant pré hospitalier lors d’une situation d’urgence demandant des notions particulières de premiers soins. Le candidat devra, entre autres, prodiguer des traitements spécifiques afin d’immobiliser une blessure tout en attendant les services pré hospitaliers d’urgence. DEA et Anaphylaxie-secouristes inclus dans ce programme.
