Swimming classes
The Sports Center will not be offering any swimming and water sports classes in Fall 2024.
The Sports Centre offers a selection of swimming classes for little fishies to novice swimmers. We also have specialized classes for adults who’d like to feel comfortable in the water or want to improve their technique to get the most out of training. Our certified instructors will ensure young and old alike are always in good hands—in order to achieve their full potential!
Preschool swim classes
4 months to 5 years old
This 8-level program lets children enjoy the water at the appropriate age and ability level. Every level is based on an aquatic-animal theme and comes with its own mascot—which makes learning fun and interesting for little ones!
The participation of a parent or guardian who can swim is mandatory.
Parent-Child 1

Child can enter and exit the pool and jump into chest-deep water with help. Float and glide on front and back. Blow bubbles in water and get their face wet. Parent or caregiver who is able to swim must be present in the water for the first 4 classes.
Description
Child will learn to jump without assistance in chest-deep water, plus kick their legs using a buoyant object. They will also learn to glide on their front and back, and how to rollover.

Description
Wearing a Personal Floatation Device (PFD), child will try jumping and sideways entry into deep water. They’ll work on weight transfer while exhaling under water.

Child can jump into shallow water wearing a PFD and recover objects from the bottom of the pool. Child can hold their breath underwater, float, glide, and kick their legs on their front and back. Parent or caregiver participation in the water not required.
Description
Child will learn to jump into chest-deep water. They will learn to open their eyes and exhale under water, as well as master leg kicks and rollovers on their side. Wearing a PFD, child will learn sideways entry into deep water followed by treading water, as well as the front crawl.

Kid’s swimming
6 to 12 years old
This program for school-aged kids will help little swimmers to develop the six basic swimming techniques (front crawl, back stroke, breast stroke, elementary back stroke, butterfly, and sidestroke), learn water safety and increase their physical fitness and endurance—all while having fun! Kids are encouraged to set goals for distance and time, which is excellent motivation for the 10-level program!

Description
Swimmer will learn to jump into chest-deep water without help, as well as kick their legs with the help of a buoyant object. They will also learn front and back glides as well as rollovers.

Swimmer must be at least 6 as of the first class. They must be able to: jump into the deep end, perform a sideways entry using a PFD, tread water for 15 seconds, perform a whip kick from a vertical position, and swim 10 metres on their front and back.
Description
Swimmer will learn to dive from a kneeling position, perform a sideways entry using a PFD, tread water, and perform the front and back crawl.

Swimmer 4

Prerequisite
Swimmer must be at least 6 as of the first class. They must be able to: tread water for 30 seconds, dive from a kneeling position, perform a forward roll, swim 10 metres on their back using a whip kick, and front and back crawl for 15 metres.
Description
Swimmer will learn to dive from a standing position, tread water, and swim under water. They will also perform breaststroke leg movements and learn the basics of breaststroke arm movements.

Prerequisite
Swimmer must be at least 6 as of the first class and able to pass the Canadian Swim to Survive program: roll into deep water, tread water for 1 minute, and swim 50 metres. They should also be able to perform a front swim for 15 metres using a whip kick, breaststroke arm movements and breathing, plus front and back crawl for 25 metres.
Description
Swimmer will learn forward dive and cannonball entries, as well as treading water with eggbeater kicks. They will also learn basic swim strokes: front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke. Swimmer will be presented with various interval training challenges.

Prerequisite
Swimmer must be at least 7 as of the first class. They can perform a shallow dive, cannonball entry, eggbeater kick, and scissor kick. They can also swim the front and back crawl for 50 metres, swim the breaststroke for 25 metres, sprint for 25 metres, and swim in 4 X 50-metre intervals.
Description
Swimmer will learn stride entries and compact jumps. They will swim 50 to 100 metres in any given style. Up to 300 metres of training per interval.

Prerequisite
Swimmer must be at least 8 as of the first class. They must be able to perform stride entries and compact jumps, tread water for 45 seconds with legs only, sprint the breaststroke for 25 metres, swim the front and back crawl for 100 metres, and swim 300 metres in intervals.
Description
The approach centres on the swimmer developing their endurance and the effectiveness of their swim techniques, all while having fun. They will learn to perform a primary assessment of a conscious victim, communicate effectively with emergency services, perform a visual scan of a swimming area, and properly throw a rescue object in an emergency.

Ideally the swimmer has successfully completed Swimmer 7 / Rookie Swim Patrol / Junior 7.
Description
As well as improving swim techniques, the swimmer will learn how to perform a primary assessment of an unconscious victim, provide care to a victim in shock, treat a victim who’s choking, and perform a rescue without a flotation device.

Ideally the swimmer has successfully completed Swimmer 8 / Ranger Swim Patrol / Junior 10.
Description
Swimmer will perfect their swimming techniques and develop their lifesaving and first-aid abilities. At the end of this course, they will be able to rescue a tired swimmer, treat a fracture or sprain, and offer aid to a victim having trouble breathing due to an allergy or asthma attack.

This program is designed for adults and teens to increase their knowledge of water safety and learn proper swimming techniques.

Swimmer will learn to float on their front and back, glide on their front and back with leg kicks, swim 10 metres on their front, plus enter and exit shallow water. They will also perform activities in the shallow end, with help.

Swimmer must be at least 13 as of first class. Some swim experience required, and swimmer must be able to swim on their front for 10 metres with ease.
Description
Swimmer will learn to swim on back with shoulder roll, swim the front and back crawl for 15 metres, dive from sitting position, dive from kneeling position, front stride dive, and tread water. They will be able to swim for at least 25 metres.

Lifesaving training
The Sports Centre offers lifesaving classes for young people as well as lifeguard training classes.
Lifesaving training
To become a lifeguard, you need four different types of training : the Bronze Medallion, the Bronze Cross, a General First Aid/DEA course and the National Lifeguard course.
General First Aid/DEA
Prerequisite
Must have Bronze Cross.
Description
This certificate prepares the candidate to take on a role as a pre-hospital responder in an emergency situation requiring specific first aid concepts.

Bronze medallion
Prerequisite
Must have Bronze Star or be 13 years old on the final exam and demonstrate the skills and knowledge of the Canadian Red Cross Junior 10 by the first class.
Description
The Bronze Medallion certificate allows candidates to gain an understanding of the four basic components of lifesaving: judgement, knowledge, skill and physical fitness. They learn the techniques of towing and carrying, defenses and releases, in order to prepare themselves to carry out the rescue of conscious and unconscious victims by taking increasingly high risks.

Bronze Cross
Prerequisite
Must have completed the Bronze medallion course.
Description
The Bronze Cross certificate is for those looking for more advanced training and want to know the basic notions of aquatic facility supervision. Swimmers will learn the difference between lifeguarding and lifesaving, basic emergency procedures and teamwork. They will also learn to rescue a spinal-injury and cardiopulmonary victim.

National Lifeguard
Prerequisite
Must have the Bronze Cross, completed the Standard First-Aid course, and be at least 15.
Description
National Lifeguard certification is a nationally recognized lifeguard-certification program, designed to provide in-depth understanding of supervision, good judgement, and being responsible when taking on the role of lifeguard in an aquatic setting.

Instructor course
The Lifesaving Society’s Instructor course prepares participants to teach and evaluate basic swimming styles and related skills and/or to train future lifeguards.
Swimming Instructor and Lifesaving Instructor course (combined)
Prerequisite
Must be 15 years old before the last day of the course and hold a Bronze Cross (or higher level) certificate.
Description
The Lifesaving Society’s Instructor course (Swimming and Lifesaving combined) prepares participants to teach and evaluate basic swimming styles and related skills, and to share their passion for lifesaving. Participants acquire proven teaching methods, various swimming style development exercises and correction methods. Participants will be able to teach and evaluate basic swimming styles and related skills, as well as to train future lifeguards by teaching first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Diving classes
The diving classes at the Sports Centre are a great way to get initiated into this fascinating sport. Adults and kids will learn to conquer their fears—as well as make a grand entrance into the water!
Children – teens
6 to 12 years old
For kids and teens who wish to learn the basics of diving in a safe environment. Learn skills on the ground, at the water’s edge and on the 1-metre springboard.
Monitors reserve the right to reclass participants, if needed.
Child – Level 1-2
Prerequisite
Diver must be at least 16 as of first class and have successfully completed Red Cross Junior 4 or demonstrate the skill and knowledge of Junior 4.
Description
For any child aged 6 to 15 who would like to learn diving basics in a safe environment. Dryland, poolside, and 1-metre board skills. Teaches the basics of diving while having fun in a safe environment.

Registration for aquatic classes and training
The Sports Center will not be offering any swimming and water sports classes in Fall 2024.
Registration period :
- Online registration on ActiveNet: registration suspended until further notice.
- Registration at the welcome desk: registration suspended until further notice.
Here are the steps to follow to register for a course :
1. Create or activate your ActiveNet account. The procedure is available here (French only).
2. Go to the ActiveNet home page and select the “Activity” tab at the top left.
3. You will then see a list of all the courses; you can also search to find the activity you want more quickly, using the “Activity Search” bar. (Ex.: Aquacardio, Swimmer 1, etc.).
4. Select the course you’re interested in from the list.
5. Register using the “Register Now” button.
6. Some customer accounts have multiple members, generally within the same family. Select the person participating in the course using the drop-down menu, then add the course to your cart.
7. Read the information on the screen, validate the read confirmation box and press “Verify”.
8. Pay for the course. You will then receive a confirmation email and a payment receipt. And just like that, you’re registered!
